South Carolina
Statewide Multimodal Transportation Plan

Why a Statewide Multimodal Transportation Plan?

The state of South Carolina has experienced rapid population growth and development in recent years and this growth is expected to continue. The demand for passenger travel and the movement of freight has grown even faster than the population. The transportation system impacts almost every element of our lives, including the economy, the environment, our safety and security, and importantly, our overall quality of life. An efficient and seamless multimodal transportation system is needed to effectively meet these critical transportation demands and to efficiently move both passengers and freight.

What Will This Plan Do?

Recognizing the need to stretch its limited funds, and to maintain and enhance South Carolina’s position in the global marketplace, SCDOT developed a statewide multimodal transportation plan that focuses on coordinated and effective use of all transportation assets. A set of strategic corridors that form the backbone of the state’s transportation system will be identified to provide a network that adequately meets passenger and freight demands.

Increasing travel demand, increasing congestion, and increasing fuel prices all point to the need for viable transportation choices. Opportunities to use alternative modes besides the automobile, better modal coordination, and better system connectivity are all critical elements of a plan that provides an effective and seamless statewide transportation system.

The South Carolina Statewide Comprehensive Multimodal Long-Range Transportation Plan was approved by the SCDOT Commission on May 14, 2008.
